Sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) is a cellulose-derived polymer with thickening, stabilizing, and film-forming properties. It dissolves easily in water, forming viscous solutions that improve the stability of emulsions and gels. It is widely used in cosmetics and personal care products because of its biocompatibility.

Practical Formulation Guide
Uses and Applications: Gels, serums, emulsions, and cleansers to control viscosity, suspension, sensory properties, or film formation.
Incorporation Method: Pre-disperse or hydrate gradually to prevent clumping. Some polymers require neutralization, and many are sensitive to salts or surfactants.
Dosage: Use the polymer-specific dosage and adjust in small increments until the target rheology is achieved.
Critical Points: Measure viscosity after complete hydration and again after 24 hours. Check pH, electrolytes, alcohols, and actives that may collapse the structure.
Good Practices: Perform stability and compatibility testing in the final formula. The supplier's TDS, COA, and SDS take precedence over any general guidance range.
