Triethyl Citrate
Deodorant Active and Fragrance Fixative
Helps fix fragrances and works as a plasticizer.
Body odor forms through the action of bacterial esterases on the skin. These enzymes break down certain sweat compounds into short-chain fatty acids that cause noticeable odors. Triethyl citrate competes with these sweat molecules and is broken down instead, when present at a high enough concentration.
When hydrolyzed by esterases, triethyl citrate breaks down into ethanol and citric acid, which are odorless. Citric acid lowers the pH at the esterase site and therefore inhibits pH-dependent enzyme activity. A lower pH also favors the optimal performance of certain deodorant actives.
Triethyl citrate: helps fix fragrances and works as a plasticizer. Used in perfumes, deodorants and nail polishes.
Made by esterifying plant-derived ethanol with citric acid, obtained from glucose syrup by fermentation of corn starch and/or sugar beet. It is 100 % of natural origin and approved by COSMOS.
A deodorant-boosting ingredient that works by inhibiting odor-forming enzymes, with a mild odor-control effect. It inhibits the lipase-based breakdown of sweat components that cause odor.
