Technical Data Sheet – Aqueous Grape Seed Extract
Aqueous grape seed extract is a plant-derived cosmetic ingredient obtained from grape seeds (Vitis vinifera), rich in natural antioxidants such as polyphenols, flavonoids and proanthocyanidins. It is known for its protective, conditioning and anti-aging properties for skin and hair.
Benefits and properties
- Potent antioxidant: neutralizes free radicals and reduces oxidative stress, helping protect the skin from the visible signs of premature aging.
- Soothing: helps calm the look of redness and irritation, for smoother, calmer-looking skin. ● Skin renewal: supports the look of firm, elastic skin. ● Moisturizing: helps keep skin and hair hydrated, contributing to softness and flexibility. ● Antioxidant support against UV-related stress (not a sunscreen; it does not replace sun protection).
Practical formulation guide
Usage level: Recommended usage level
- Recommended concentration: generally 0.5–5 %, depending on the formulation and type of cosmetic product.
How to use and incorporate: Aqueous, glycolic or glycerin extracts: add to the water phase or during cool-down (below 40 °C/104 °F). Oil extracts: add to the oil phase or during cool-down. Powdered extracts: first dissolve or disperse in water or glycerin. Adjust the pH at the end.
Formulation tips:
- Extracts contribute color, odor and microbial load: use a broad-spectrum preservative system and run a microbial challenge test on the final formula.
- They may precipitate in the cold or over time; filter or shake before use and check that the color or clarity of the finished product does not change.
- Before scaling up, make a pilot batch and run a stability test (cycles at 4 / 25 / 45 °C/39 / 77 / 113 °F for 4 weeks, checking odor, color, pH, viscosity and separation) in the final packaging.
Compatibility:
- Compatible with most cosmetic ingredients, including emulsifiers, preservatives and other botanical extracts. ● Stable at pH 3.5–7.5.
Storage: Storage conditions: keep in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place. Protect from direct light and extreme temperatures. ● Shelf life: approximately 2 years under proper storage conditions.
Precautions: For topical use only. Do not ingest. ● A patch test is recommended to avoid reactions on sensitive skin.
